MICHELIN announced this year's hotel selection on September 18. Three days later, the MICHELIN Guide emailed to tell us MISSING Hotel had been awarded One MICHELIN Key in 2026.
Our page in the MICHELIN Guide calls MISSING "perfectly comfortable yet delightfully off-the-grid". We're grateful. It's what we hoped this place would be.
The founders spent three years looking before they found this land, and it became theirs in June 2020. Then, with a crew of six, they worked 16-hour days for about a year.
The well goes down more than 650 feet. The two miles of utility trenches became the pathways. Where an oak stood in the way of a deck, they would not cut it, so they built the deck around it. They call them "weirdly shaped decks".
Some of the 11 villas and geodesic domes sit up in the trees. Each one has its own dip pool or hot tub, a private bathroom and air conditioning.
MISSING has no restaurant. Guests cook on the griddle, and H-E-B is 15 minutes away.
Guests usually tell our team they don't expect what they experience here, because it was never shown on the website nor marketed on social media.
There is land to walk: the trails, the meditation labyrinth and the forest. Elvis and Presley, our two mini cows, live here too. There is also yoga, a games area and an onsite driving range.
Hotels can receive One, Two or Three Keys, and MICHELIN's shorthand for One is "a very special stay". Inspectors judge hotels on five standards, among them value for the price and what a hotel adds to its setting. This year's selection has 359 Key hotels in the United States.
